Some nights the earlier tours see more mantas. Aloha.įor those reading: It's a tricky thing.doing manta tours.as the mantas have a mind of their own and come and go as they please. Mahalo for the review and we hope to see you again. It's great to read that your group was able to see 4 mantas on your tour out with us and that we were able to share this experience with you. We had an overall positive experience because THANKFULLY we did get to see a few rays at the end. That being said, our guides were knowledgeable and lovely people. It's a bit sketchy that companies are offering a slot that happens BEFORE the sun is all the way down. Your chances of seeing the majestic rays is certainly higher. But in hindsight, I would recommend that people wait until a time when it is completely dark. I didn't know that at the time- we took what we saw available. Honestly, the first tour group of the evening is not the best spot. The luckiest groups see the manta rays spin over and over beneath them. We saw about 4 manta rays make slow passes below us, and then in one glorious ending, a manta ray spun up towards us. The finally did, just minutes before our time on the water was ending. The manta rays don't usually show up until it's dark, so much of our time on the water was spent waiting and HOPING that the rays would show up. if you get to see one! Ours was the first tour of the evening, so the sun was just barely setting as we got out on the water. The manta rays are as spectacular as everyone says the are. I recommend you book this activity on your first night on the Big Island, so if it needs to be postponed, you’ve still got time to reschedule. Then both hands on the handles of the board, eyes down, and wait for the mantas to start their underwater show :) We each had a pool noodle for under our hips to help us float. Once in the water, it was a very short 3 metre swim over to our guide and the surfboard float we would hold onto. There were 5 in the 7.40pm tour that I did and plenty of room for everyone. This meant spending quality time in the water not travelling to and from the site. It was only a short 4 minute boat ride before getting in the water with these beautiful creatures. Watching them glide through the water and swim right under you was one of the best experiences I’ve had. They swam and fed underneath us almost as soon as we entered the water. We saw 4 Mantas on our trip and it was amazing. Put this experience, with this crew at the top of your to do list!
